What Is ‘The Best’ When It Comes To Beauty?
Last week Tyrese’s ‘I Gotta Chick’ video caused a major uproar when fans noticed that there was one thing missing from the video: a mix of black women. I guess it may be important to note that out of about 20 women, he did throw in a ‘token black girl’. Tyrese immediately responded to the backlash saying:
“I had a 2 day audition. I welcomed ALL women and went with the BEST,” he tweeted. “I don’t do favors… Doesn’t matter the race!! I’m Black as shit!!! Love my sisters!! You do auditions and go for the BEST! Not race! Love u!”
His desire to choose the best is not an issue to me. In entertainment, and any business for that matter, wouldn’t we all choose the best? The issue is what he defines as ‘the best’. I’m sure that there were very beautiful black women just as there were beautiful latino, white, and other races that auditioned for the video. He chose whom he found the most attractive or according to him ‘the best’.
Beauty comes in all different races and shades, but have some people been brainwashed into what defines beauty? Of course a person likes what they like; but why is that the preference? I think to really understand why someone considers something beautiful would take tons of psychological dissecting, in which I am not licensed to do (at least not yet). However, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I can’t help but think that black women often get the bad end of the stick in so many ways.
As much as I like some of Tyrese’s music, I think the lack of black women in is video is an example of just that. I don’t blame Tyrese, or really anyone for that matter; but I wish that people would be open-minded with their definition of beauty and really evaluate why they consider someone more attractive than another. Is it an opinion of your own or what society has defined for us?
Tyrese’s fan base consists of mainly black women; and to see a video with a lack of ‘us’ is somewhat a slap in the face; but can we get mad at the man for choosing what he considers ‘the best’?
Ladies, what are your thoughts?

Tyrese is known for his lack of black women in music videos and everything else. We should stop supporting men who don’t support us.

Beauty is subjective but i agree why do men consider certain women beautiful and others not. This dates back to the light skin, red-bone, long hair theory. I’m going to be honest, most black men and their preferences disgust me. At this point I don’t care if they are brainwashed or not.
And I am considered ‘ligh-skinned’ but i am very much a black woman. NOt mixed nor exotic so I still wouldn’t have been considered ‘the best’ in Tyreses eyes and unfortunately in a lot of black mens eyes.

Well we know what he considers the best.
