What initiated your passion for fashion?

 My passion for fashion started with my mom taking me to Marshall Fields. Marshall Fields was like heaven on earth for every little girl. Just seeing the visual merchandisers prep for the new season was what triggered my love/respect for fashion.

 How would you describe your personal style?

 My style is classic blended with tons of color. I love to wear classic pieces and jazz it up with a mixture if colors. 

 Who are your fashion icons or inspirations?

 My fashion icons are the late Grace Kelly, Princess Kate Williams, Victoria Beckham and Audrey Hepburn

 What are your three fashion must-haves?

 Three fashion must haves for me are a tapered blazer, Jeffery Campbell shoes and a boyfriend watch.

It’s no secret that fashion is a passion of Kanye West. The usually cocky rapper, admitted his nervousness as he debuted his fashion line, DW, at this weekend’s Paris Fashion Week; but not surprisingly the rapper was greeted by rave reviews for his attempt at fashion.

His designs were definitely influenced by established fashion greats, but that’s expected since Kanye seems to be a student of fashion as of lately. Overall, I loved most of the looks Kanye’s models wore on the runway. It’s a breath of fresh air to see a rapper-turned designer who creates clothing for women other than denim with gaudy logos.

The older I’ve gotten, the more I’ve gained an appreciation for classic, effortless style. You know style that doesn’t look as if you’ve spent hours in the mirror trying to look  fabulous (even if you did). Someone who embodies an effortless style is designer, Rachel Roy. Even better is that she has a clothing line that embodies the same thing. Everyone from our First Lady Michelle Obama to Gabrielle Union has donned Rachel’s designs.

I love her classic pieces mixed with a bit of edge. From her hair and make-up to her wardrobe, nothing says “I’m forcing this look and yeah I look uncomfortable doing so”. Instead Rachel’s look screams “I am effortlessly fabulous”.

Maya Angelou said it best, ‘this is my life. It’s my one time to be me’. As a young girl this notion may sound like mere words spoken from one of America’s favorite poets; but as girls become women, these words become an aspiring guideline for our lives.

We realize that we are in control of our lives and ultimately our happiness, success, and everything else, good or bad, depends on us. Simply put, the things we thought, said, and the way we lived as  young girls are different from the way we live as women, as they should be.

From relationships, jobs, to life lessons, the songs we sang as young girls are replaced with those of grown women; and through living and learning we know that girls and women sing two different songs and proclaim very different mantras.

While different women have diverse mantras for their lives, most can agree on a few guidelines that we live, or should live by, as we’ve grown from girls to women.

In an 80′s-90′s inspired video (the best time for r&b music), Monica sings about giving anything to have that special someone. As a huge  Monica fan, the song didn’t immediately grab me; but after listening to the words and seeing the video, I’m definitely feeling the song. Not to mention, she looks great!
